The Roberts-Harry Clinic is promoting the British Dental Health Foundation's National Smile Month 2010: Teeth4Life.

Not so many years ago teeth for life was quite a rare thing as people lost their teeth through tooth decay and gum disease. Now it is possible to have 'Teeth for Life'; brushing your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and reducing sugary snacks and drinks has improved the dental health of the nation enormously.

Liz Roberts-Harry, Periodontal Specialist at the Roberts-Harry Clinic says: 'More and more children are now growing up without the need for fillings. Evidence of the effect of fluoride in toothpaste and sensible diet to help prevent tooth decay is well known. Prevention of gum or periodontal disease is less well understood although we know that removing plaque from teeth is important. We also know that smoking and some conditions such as diabetes can lead to increased levels of gum disease. Scientific research continues worldwide to establish associations between gum disease and heart disease, strokes and even premature babies.

Gum disease affects almost everyone at some time in their life. The problem is it can be completely painless and people can be quite unaware of its presence; left unattended it can progress to tooth looseness and finally tooth loss. That is why regular dental checks are essential to identify gum disease at the earliest opportunity and provide treatment to stop it. The earlier the disease is treated the better in order to keep the mouth healthy. Cosmetic dentistry can offer so much now to enhance a smile but this is not achievable without healthy teeth and gums. A healthy smile is a happy smile which will give you Teeth for Life.'

To celebrate National Smile Month we are offering a 50% reduction on periodontal and orthodontic consultations (usually £95). Please contact the Clinic for details.
